Japex
Free Early releaseSelf-hosted personal intelligence. Evidence stays. Knowledge is derived. Agents get context, not a notes dump.
Japex is a local brain you run yourself, in Docker. Capture a thought, drop in a file, point it at a source tree — Japex keeps the original evidence untouched and derives searchable knowledge from it, so agents get a context package instead of a pile of notes to dig through.
What It Does
- Immutable event log — history is never rewritten
- A librarian process derives claims from what you capture; anything uncertain goes to Review instead of being guessed at
- Drop-folder capture, plus an optional repo watch that indexes a source tree in place — files are never moved
- Owner console at
http://localhost:8080 - Local embeddings by default — content doesn't leave the machine for vector search
- Optional xAI/SpaceXAI for reasoning; capture and search both work fine without it
Good For
- A personal or shop brain that agents can query
- Keeping invoices, dumps, and source trees as real evidence instead of pasting them into chat over and over
- Running alongside GG AI Forge as a Local Tool
Not For
- Hosting other people's private mail without their own machine
- Replacing Forge — Forge is the workstation, Japex is the brain it can call
- A multi-tenant SaaS brain — this is a single-owner, self-hosted download
Requirements
- Windows 10/11 (64-bit) with Docker Desktop, or Linux/macOS with Docker
- 8 GB RAM minimum, 16 GB recommended (local embedding model)
- ~2 GB disk for images and the model; more as the brain grows
- No GPU required
Install (Windows)
- Download the
.zipand unzip it to a local disk (e.g.C:\japex). Don't run it from Google Drive. - Install Docker Desktop and start it.
- Copy
.env.exampleto.env. SetJAPEX_SECRET_KEY,JAPEX_OWNER_PASSWORD, andJAPEX_API_KEYSto long random strings of your own. - Run
docker compose up --build -d. - Open
http://localhost:8080and unlock with yourJAPEX_OWNER_PASSWORD.
Linux/macOS: same Compose file.
How To Use
- Console → Capture a thought, Search, Ask, or Review.
- Drop files into the configured drop folder (default documented as
C:\JapexDrop— change it if you'd rather use somewhere else). - Point agents at the API using the key from your
.env— never the owner password.
Tips, Limitations & Legal
- Early release — schema and UI will change.
- The public zip is empty software. It does not contain The Gizmo Grotto's own private brain.
- You are responsible for what you ingest (mail, PDFs, source). Treat untrusted files as data.
- No warranty. Provided as is. The Gizmo Grotto / JD Nova Group LLC is not liable for data loss, leaked secrets you put in your own
.env, or agent actions. - Secrets never belong in git, Discord, or a download zip — including yours.
FAQ
Is this Forge? No. Forge is the desktop workstation. Japex is a self-hosted brain. They can talk to each other; they're not the same installer.
Does my data go to the cloud? Embeddings default to local. Optional paid reasoning uses an API key you set yourself — you can refuse external AI entirely and still use capture/search.
Can I publish my brain? You can — this download is the engine, not someone else's memory.
Do I need a GPU? No.
