Choosing an Urn for Your Pet

Choosing an urn is one of the small, hard decisions that come after a loss. Here is what we tell friends who ask: how big it needs to be, the kinds to choose from, and how a statue or bust can sit beside it.

What size urn do you need?

The rule most urn makers use is about 1 cubic inch of space for every pound your pet weighed, rounded up. A 40 pound dog needs an urn of at least 40 cubic inches. If you are between sizes, choose the bigger one.

Look for an urn of at least 40 cubic inches.

Keepsake urns hold a small portion, so family members can each keep some close. Ask the crematory if you are not sure of the amount.

A statue or bust beside the urn

Many families set a small statue or bust of their pet next to the urn, so the shelf shows who they were and not only where they rest. We do not make urns ourselves; we make the likeness, from your photos, and you approve a preview before we print.

A gentle guide to pet urns

Most urn makers size pet urns at about 1 cubic inch for every pound of body weight, rounded up, so a 40 pound dog needs an urn of at least 40 cubic inches. Keepsake urns hold a small portion for family members.

The Gizmo Grotto does not make urns. We make memorial statues and busts from your photos that many families place beside an urn, so the shelf shows who their pet was.
